I will be traveling into Canada from August 2nd to August 4th and I am a minor(17). I will be traveling into Canada with my friends parents and i wanted to know what I should put in my letter in case I am stopped at the border because there were some concerns that I could not get back into the US without a letter.

The parents of ME will allow their son to travel with FRIENDS PARENTS between the dates August 2nd, 2008 and August 4th, 2008 to Canada.

What else should I add. I am going to get this notarized, But I wanted to make sure everything was right.

I am a US citizen.

Thanks in advance!

  1. It should state that they give their authorization for you to travel with (friends parents name/address where they live etc) and how you know them(friends of the family etc), where you are going, where you will be staying, how long you will gone, when you are returning. It should have all your parents contact info, address, phone numbers, home work cell, etc.

And yes it should be notarized then they do not question it!

You will need your original birth certificate for proof of citizenship and if you have a drivers license it would be a good idea to take that, but if you do not it is not necessary.

You may or may not be asked to provide the letter on either side, its a 50/50 chance!!

  2. One of the previous posters has given you most of the information you need.  There is just one other thing to keep in mind.  If both of your parents are named on your birth certificate, the letter must be signed by both of them.  Additionally, they should both be available by phone when you are crossing the border in case the border officials want to check.  Officials on both sides of the border are very careful now about minors crossing the border without both parents.  You may not be asked to show anything other than your birth certificate, but you may be asked for the letter, and they can choose to phone your parents, so be prepared.
