I love to write and want to write an interesting story about my life that has some differences but is still basically about me. I would like for you to read this next part & tell me what I could do for the plot / main idea of my story, and give me any ideas you have.

I am 14 and in grade 9. I have many issues with myself and problems that I want to be resolved..I know that the only person who can solve these problems is me but the help of my therapist , family and close friends would definitly help clear some things up. I have been deaf in both ears since grade 1, and they still don't know how I got it. I know have a cochlear implant, a fancy name for a hearing aid, which has given me a lot of low self-esteem, and because of that I'm very shy and have SO much trouble fitting in. Because I'm in highschool, there is so many cliques, and that makes it harder to fit in but Ive played hockey for 8 years, and that's really the only place where I feel like I'm ME and I'm outgoing and fun.

  1. Cutie, if you want to write about your situation, you have something very interesting to impart.  You are one of a very small percentage of people (in terms of the total population)

who became deaf in childhood and who has a cochlear implant.

Your experiences of this (good or bad) will be of interest and value to many people (including the doctors, audiologists and TODs who were involved in putting it in, though I'm not suggesting they're you're audience).  Your audience is the same audience that we all write for - the great, wide world.

Most people, most of us,  would be interested to hear your experiences and the emotional journey you have gone through.

As you say 'the help of your family, close friends and therapist' may help clear things up for you, but in terms of what YOU feel, only you can say and you are completely in charge of what you want to say.

In comparison with many fully hearing people on Answers, you are highly literate -  a person with shyness and feelings of inferiority - well, that's a universal!  And you love hockey and you're brilliant at it.

I'd love to hear your story - as they always say in writing classes 'write what you know' - and write it from the heart and from your deeply felt experience - what else can you do?  Try and make some bits of it funny is all I would recommend.  Maybe that would make a publishable feature article in a newspaper or a magazine.

But maybe  you are saying you don't want to write directly about yourself and the effects of hearing loss and cochlear implants  - maybe you want to write fiction where, incidentally, the character has this limitation on their comprehension of what is going on around them.

I think this would be very interesting.  I can imagine a novel (maybe even a crime novel) that bridges the world of the hearing and the Deaf Community and I think this is a great subject for a book.  At 14, you are probably too young to write it but you're in a unique position to see across two worlds and comment upon them.

Have more confidence in yourself as a writer and give it a go!

  2. I'm not sure what your paper is supposed to be about.  Are you writing an autobiography about yourself?  Could the main idea be living with your hearing problem?  I couldn't imagine being deaf in both ears.  That would be really hard to live with.  You have a unique point of view, and this sounds like it could be a really interesting paper.

There are several grammatical errors- I pointed out a few.

Why has the cochlear implant given you low self-esteem?  You should explain this in your paper.
