Question:

What should my training speed really be?

Currently, I can run a 5K with about a 7:30 pace and a half marathon with an 8:30 pace. With those times, it is reccomended that my easy training pace be at a 10:00 min. mile!! That seems awfully slow to me...In training, I usually run my long easy runs at a 9:00 to 9:30 pace. Am I training too fast? Would I be better off in the long run slowing it down a bit for training? I'm just curious why my training pace should be so slow? I got this information off of runnersworld.com under the running coach.

  1. Ten minute miles is too slow.

Unless you are running 10 to 15 miles why would you run that slow?

Run at the speed you are comfortable when doing long, easy days.

Run at 70 to 80% on tempo days, and run harder on interval days.

No one can design a program for everyone.

Run how you feel, if you are tired after recovery, then you may have over trained or need more rest.

If you feel fine then you are doing good.

If you can run 7:30 for 5K, 10:00 is not going to do much for you.
