What should one do to prevent tomato worms and protect tomato plants in deck pots?

I finally found the gross tomato worm that has been wrecking my tomato plants which I've been nurturing in one of those deck gardening contraptions. What is the best way to prevent this happening again?

I've been growing tomatoes for the last four years and have had no problems with worms.  The only advice I was ever given in regards to my gardens, was to plant marigolds in with the plants.  I don't reckon I know what they were supposed to prevent anymore, but I keep planting them. lol

I'm still trying to figure a way to fend off 75 yr old italian neighbors though.  They don't seem put off by the marigold idea...
