  1. When using a macintosh laptop, always put it on a flat surface (eg. Table) not on the bed, so the air could pass through to prevent heating. When the battery is full, always drain it and fully recharge without using the machine to make the battery last longer. Don't use the machine with the AC adaptor plugged in with a fully charged battery, it will make the battery's life shorter. Always put the laptop on a carry bag or a leather case when carrying. When opening the lid of the laptop, always open it with your hands on the center of the lid, not on left or right.

  2. Read Wikipedia for very in-depth articles about laptop batteries. You should use the batteries, you should work to keep the temperature lower - maybe buy a stand with some fans that plugs into your usb rather than just keep it on a table.

  5. Ignore the superstitious people who think you should discharge the battery constantly (that'll only ruin it), in fact you should be running your computer from the wall as often as possible (Li-Ion batteries don't have memory and do not get improved by discharges, they can also only handle a few hundred cycles).  If you do need to use the full battery life though then you shouldn't be afraid to run it flat, just try to avoid it (and don't leave it flat for too long, lest the protection circuitry disable the battery (which is by design to prevent it from catching fire)).

You also need to accept that the battery has a limited lifespan which you have pretty much no control over (if you aren't using the computer for an extended period of time you can slow the aging by discharging the battery to 40% and putting it in the fridge, oh and don't leave it in a hot car as that speeds up aging of the battery (and increases the chance of the friendly neighbourhood thief borrowing your computer)).  Every few months you'll need to discharge the battery to recalibrate the battery meter to take account of the aging (but don't do that too often and know that you're not improving the battery, just making the computer give an accurate indication of the battery life).

Li-Ion batteries also can't be overcharged (the protection circuits won't allow it for safety reasons) so there's no problem with leaving the battery in the computer while you use it.

Now for cooling you should leave your computer on a hard surface (although if the computer isn't working hard it should be able to rest on your lap and not overheat).  After a while it might need to be cleaned out (as dust can build up in the vents) although if the computer is still under warranty then it should be possible to get that done free.

Of course nothing I've said so far is in anyway specific to macs but applies to all modern laptops.
