  1. When storing the boat on the trailer the motor should be tilted down to allow the water to drain out completely.   This is especially important in the winter,  if you live in the northern part of the country.  Water could enter the exhaust and build up in the lower unit if you leave the motor tilted up. Then when the temp gets very cold, it will freeze and crack the lower unit.

Regarding trailering, the position varies depending on the trailer.  On some trailers, the motor will scrape the road on bounces, if it is left tilted straight down.  There is less stress on the transom with the motor tilted down, so leave it down ONLY IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH GROUND CLEARANCE.  If not, tilt it up.  Some trailers are equipped with transom saver  brackets to support the motor in a tilted up position and reduce stress on the transom.  If your trailer doesn't have such a bracket,  they are available as an add on feature.

Here is a link to a mail order shop that sell several different versions of transom savers.

  2. always in the down position --like it 's in the water. Never ride with it up.
