Question:

What should the tachometer (RPM) show when the car is idling?

The tachometer reads between 750 and 1000 when the car is idling. Is this normal?

I also notice that it can go up to 8000 RPM. 7000 and 8000 have a red marking below them and 6000 is yellow. Does the red mean that it is dangerous to rev up to 8000?

  1. Between 500 and 800 is preferable.

Yes, over rev is repeated, the engine will break down soon.

That depends on what car you are talking about?

That is called "red line" and revving the engine into the red line and you risk engine damage.

    Good Luck...

  3. Yes 750-1000 is normal. If you rev any motor beyond redline then of course you are asking to blow it up. You could how ever build your engine and head, basically add performance parts where your engine can handle the abuse but thats is a TOTALLY different ball game. If your tach had GREEN then you'd go right......YELLOW means....you can keep going but you might have to stop which leads to....>>>>>RED which usually means stop dont go beyond that point....ya digg.

  4. The idle depends on the engine size, make, and model. The red on the tach. is there because it is dangerous for that particular engine to rev that high, and the yellow is to let the driver know to shift or back off, as the rpms are borderline high.
