Question:

What should we do in Rome (aside from the obvious)?

In July we'll (“we” being my mother and I...I'm 18 and she's 37, if that helps any) be in Rome for 8 days.

I went to Italy once before when I was 15....LOVED it. Can't wait to go back. This time, I'm taking my mother. I know the major sites to visit, but any suggestions for something off beat is appreciated. Days 1-7 we're pretty much just going to play it by ear....though, we'll probably end up planning where we want to go on what days on the long plane ride there. Our last night in Rome, we're going to see the Rolling Stones at the Olimpico Stadium. Right now, that is our only for sure thing.

I mean, it's Rome...we won't get bored. But if there's anything specific that you loved or would love to see/do, don't hold back!

Thanks for the answers.

  1. first take a flight to amsterdam then check out rome soon afterwards so ya can check out the obvious and rolling stones concert

  2. I would say Testavere.  I loved it there.  Walk around and find the flea market.  If you forgot anything, you will be able to buy it here cheaply.

Also, Campo di Fiore.  Make sure you get there early to pack a nice lunch in one of the piazzas.  And get there late, what a great place to sing, dance and have fun.

  3. You could take a walk around Trastevere - it's an interesting neighbourhood with a lot of colourful characters and cheap shopping. From there you can visit the Jewish ghetto which is really interesting and quite a bit different from the rest of the city.

If you are there on a Sunday, go to the Porta Portese market. Most of it is cheap c**p, but there are deals to be found there. If you go, do NOT take a purse - wear a money belt because the pick pocketers are out in full force. You can find anything there from the knockoff Gucci sunglasses to leather jackets, shoes, nintendo machines, perfume, BBQs....it's a flea market and get ready to bargain - that's where the fun is!

There's also a really great restaurant near the Colesseo called Hostaria Isidoro - and they have a sample menu where they keep bringing you different kinds of pasta and all you have to say is "stop!" It was about 14 Euro for 4 types of pasta and wine. I guarantee you will be full.

  4. The church Santa Maria della Concezione on Via Veneto has a crypt decorated in bones.  Really weird, but very cool to see.  It's a nice area to walk in, and it only takes a few minutes to see.

  5. Ponte Milvio!! ;)

    A brooke for lovers!
