What should we do with our old TVs when we go digital in 2009, and we don't want to use converters?

Do we donate, throw away, sell...what?

Also, aren't plasma screens going to give the best view, even if you decide to keep your old TV with a converter?

My old TV is looking pretty funny these days, compared to the plasmas. It sort of reminds me of an old 8-track!

  1. There's always donating via Freecycle. SOMEone will want it...either because they don't have a TV, your old one is bigger than their current one, or they're one of those crafty people that want to make it an aquarium.

  2. Sell it at a yard sale to someone who has cable or a satellite.

Take it to hazardous waste site and pay to have it recycled.

Keep it and get dragged into the 21st century.

  3. have you not seen the stupid advertisement with the robot on it about switching to didgital. The wee robot says that "nearly all tv's can be converted" and the two guys who were carrying the old tv down to the skip had to carry it all the way back up to the house near the top of a high rise flat with the elevator broken lol.

  4. Unless you are still watching television over a set of rabbit ears or an antenna, those old tube (CRT) TVs will still work fine even after the digital conversion in February 2009.

Of course the picture quality won't match one of the new HDTV LCD or Plasma sets, but for bedrooms, kitchens, or other rooms where they television isn't watched frequently, they will still serve their purpose for years to come.

If you do decide to upgrade to a new HDTV, you can dispose of your old television in a variety of ways.  You can donate it to a local non-profit agency or Goodwill, you can try to sell it at a rummage sale, you can write "free" on a sign and place it on the curb where it will likely be snatched up within hours, or you can try to take it to a pawn shop and get a few bucks for it, however I suspect CRT televisions won't be worth much in another year or so, thus don't expect to get much for it.

  5. 1. Household Hazardous Waste Recycling

    2. Sell to someone who needs a used TV and has cable or satellite or a converter

    3. Donate the set to a charity that can sell it or give it to someone who needs it
