We have a 10 galloon aquarium. We had fish, but couldn't keep them alive. We thought about a turtle, but we read that they get too big for our size aquarium. What do you suggest? We need something easy to take care of and something that doesn't smell!

  1. Hermit crabs are fun to watch and pretty easy to look after. They only smell if you don't take out there food every few days or if they die and you don't take them out straight away. if you keep them though, most of them will die in a year but that only happens if they aren't kept in the right conditions. some can live for 7 years and there are some people who have had them for ten years. you can give them fruit and stuff thats pretty easy to get at a pet shop you can find rocks and sticks they can hide in and climb over in your backyard just wash them first.

I Think They're Cute! it might cost a bit to get a heating thingy to keep them warm but i did not need one for my hermits cause i have an airconditioner  They are really active at night time! and any information you need if you get them is easy to get of the internet and from a pet shop   :)+<    Have Fun!

Hey! how come i got a thumbs down Hermit crabs are cool!?

    :(+<

  2. I totally understand what you are going through.

I live on an island where the water heavy on metal content and no matter how much I treated the water and let my tank cycle, I lost fish.

I finally started using Spring Water and Drinking Water in Gallon jugs from Walmart...and have yet to have a fish kill since then.  Distilled water is lacking minerals which are natural and only aid in a freshwater tank.  I would not used distilled at all.

My suggestion is to fill the tank up with Gallon jugs of Spring or Drinking water.  Treat the water for Chlorine and let the filter run for a couple of weeks.  Then add a Betta.  Let this be the start and keep the Betta going for a while...then decide if ya want to add more fish.  Even if you dont, you will have a very colorful fish that you can enjoy.

    Best of Luck!

  3. Check you tap-water, it may be too hard for keeping fish, I would buy distilled gallons of water from the store, and for fish, don't put too many fish in a 10 gallon, that size is really for beginners, I would reccomend guppies, or betta's, do not put two male betta's together, you'll have a war on your hands. Good luck.

  4. make one betta happy--they are so mistreated with tiny spaces, a 10 gallon aquarium will give him such a good life (given it has a filter).

  5. 10 gallon is not much for most fish. you can put 1 betta or 8 neon tetras in it though.

You can also use it as a nursery tank if you have another bigger tank.

  6. haha you can get 2-5 hermit crabs. i have 2. or you can buy some black mollies or a betta.

    good luck!!! =D
