Depends on how formal and where the dinner party will be held at. But then again it should be what you feel most comfortable wearing as long as you are dressed nice. As long as you feel like you look good who cares what anyone else thinks. Just make yourself look like WOW and that's all that matters.

there are no certain outfits decided for a formal dinner party.

Options are:

1] a saree (it should not be like wedding sarees colors but rather cool colors , cottons are have great variety and look elegant too)...

------>it shouldnot be too sober or too flashy kind of thing.

2]western outfits are okie. You could wear a formal suit, or  shirt with well ironed pants. Jeans can also acceptable.

------>Avoid capris or 3/4th types...unless it is family formal dinner.

3] salwaar -Kammez: nowadys one have a choice between various colors and materials from readymade to to-be stiched kind of thing.

------> same rules as saree.

Whatever you wear must be comfortable, avoid jeans and tanktop type, or jeans which have washed out effect /torn/etc etc like the college type.

Saree.. the soft crepe or georgette ones. Looks very s**y and elegant.

But if you are going in for dancing, skirts are quite in right now worn with halter tops.

Else gowns are always there, if you can carry it off.

it depends on ur body type..If u can carry of western wear,black trousers paired up with a good shirtn a gu pair of sandals,preferrably shoes,these days u get the stilletos,so go for that.N in Indian wear go for a well stitched salwar or a sari.

Dont accessorise urself too much.

If you are in India all most all the women wear Indian style outfits like Sari Salwar,lehanga.

but if you live in some other countries then that type of cloths.

i think indian outfit will be fantastic but we should always wear that fit us as i am a t.v actoress so whatever my designer say i wear that but i always want to wear western outfits
