  1. go pick a fight with a big guy...and dont stop fighting him till u beat him!

  2. Tou need to take a hard look at your life and figure out why you are getting into these situations.  If you're in that bad of a neighborhood, move.  If you are going to places with people trying to fight you, don't go there.  Unless you are in the military, you should not need to fight.

If you want to learn, then find a school that suits you and put your heart into it.  Style is far less important than your dedication to it.

  3. Go and see what kind of marital art u are interesting in! For me is Muay Thai!

  4. There's really no NEED to learn how to fight. It can be helpful though. You just have to know when fighting is appropriate. Though martial arts look cool, they aren't very practical. That's why they're called martial "arts". I suggest buying some videos about Navy SEAL hand-to-hand combat training. That would be very helpful. But if you insist on using martial arts, I would say you should look into Akido, and Jiu-Jitsu. There might be a school somewhere near you for something like that. Just don't take classes for something that looks cool, or impressive. Things like Karate are designed to be fancy, more than useful. Sorry that I keep blathering on, but I think I know a lot about the topic. You might want to choose something that suits you. Some arts focus on punching (karate), while others focus on kicking (Tai-kwon-do). Akido and Jui-jitsu focus mostly on grappling, which is helpful in disabling the opponent, and allowing you to keep control of the situation.

  5. You should go explore different gyms and see what kind of martial art they provide. Study them and ask questions. That way, you can narrow down all your choices from instructors, martial art, and gym.

  6. I would take t1992's advice with heed - aikido is taught with compliance (except tomiki aikido which often involves some resistance) and so I wouldn't learn it for self defence. Also he suggested buying Navy SEAL videos and learning from them - DO NOT LEARN SELF DEFENCE FROM VIDEOS OR YOUTUBE. If you already train then they can teach you new techniques, but unless you learn from a qualified instructor you're not doing yourself any favours, you're risking your life. Karate has flashy elements, but if you choose a basic but powerful style such as kyokushin you will learn good habits and will toughen up because they spar with no protective gear.

As mentioned by two other responses, Muay Thai is good for learning to defend yourself as it's simple and proven to be effective and not flashy. Also, basic western kickboxing will teach you similar things although has less of a repertoire.

As most fights go the the ground quite quickly, perhaps you might invest in a grappling art such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Judo. BJJ is renowned as the best grappling art - it's effective, proven and taught with resistance (similar to muay thai, most UFC fighters learn BJJ for their groundwork and it's part of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program).

You need to consider your strengths and weaknesses and make an educated decision based on thorough research of many martial arts. Following that you should research the schools in your area and check their credentials. For the uninformed, many martial arts schools may seem perfect but they're really flawed. The Bullshido website has forums about it, so if you want to check the credentials of a gym you can check it there for some sound advice.

    good luck

  7. Muay Thai is what 90 percent of MMA fighters use like in the UFC. It is very basic punches, kicks, knees, and elbow strikes. You can become good faster than most martial arts because it is simple yet much more effective then most arts in practical sitiuations.

  8. What you do is learn.

    Suggestions:

for striking: boxing, mauy thai ,sanshou, kyokushin karate

for grappling: judo, brazilian jujitsu, wrestling.

For a mix of grappling and striking: combat sambo, shidokan karate, kajukembo.

    good luck!

  9. What t1992 DOESN'T understand is that There are LOTS of types of martial arts AND combinations too, NOT JUST what he mentioned.  My daughter goes to Shaolin Kempo Karate, THREE types of  martial arts IN ONE!  This is an EXCELLENT form of martial arts and once you have learned a cartain level of it, you will be UNDEFENSIBLE against ANY opponent.  Just google Villaris Martial Arts...they have studios/dojos ALL Over the U.S. and Canada...I KNOW they have studios in Long Island, NY and Florida for sure.  When you look up the Villari's site, look up the history AND read it!  It will tell you how Fred Villari founded the school, how he mixed 3 types of martial arts, and why, and why Shaolin Kempo Karate as taught at Villari's Martial Arts is superior.  WHATEVER you choose, DON'T GIVE UP...it can take 5 years OR MORE to become a black belt!  They say at my daughter's karate school, a black belt is a white belt that NEVER quit!
