  1. Never use water, it will spread the fire.

if you have no extinguisher for oil fires, or fire blanket handy, do the following:

First rule of firefighting=To extinguish any fire reduce or remove at least 1 of the 3 essentials, more if possible:

    a] Oxygen

    b] Heat

    c] Fuel

    So..

    1. Turn off stove; [reduces b]

    2. Wrap damp tea towel around hand and place a snug fitting lid over the pan - the flames will consume the oxygen beneath the lid and there will be no more to burn. [removes a]

    3. A thick DAMP cloth if no snug fitting lid is second choice.  Not dripping wet but damp enough not to catch fire. [removes a]

    4. CAREFULLY slide the pan to a cool ring on your stove, after it is out.  The one it was on will still be warm even after turning it off. [reduces b more]

DO NOT TRY TO TIP BURNING OIL DOWN THE SINK TO TAKE AWAY THE FUEL, You could well burn yourself, dropping or spilling the oil on yourself.

That would be my plan of attack.

  2. Children!

    Petrol!

    Water!

    None of the above!

  3. petrol

  4. Your head or your aarse, although in a panic use your aarse as it has more chance of filling the pan and cutting off the oxygen.

  5. water!!!

  6. Chips

  7. Hamsters

  8. Defo, water and probably not lighter fluid either

  9. every one,s saying water, the rules are soak a (um damp)  tea towel/ cloth in "water"and throw over pan!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Water

  11. vodka or turps

  12. Never-ever use water as you will make the fire uncontrollable,

burn the house down ,or get burned very badly. use a Foam extinguisher available from most DIY shops.

  13. Water.  A dampened tea towel is ideal for putting out a chip pan fire

  14. Never use a water pistol (Dr Who style) or run with it through the house to throw it out the front door, only to find it is a deep fat frier and it is still plugged in!!   :+D

Never too young to tell kids what to do in an emergency (see link)

  15. Never use (any flammable liquid or) water. Oil floats on water and the water will simply spread the oil and hence the fire. Some extinguishers will also blow the oil out of the fryer and onto the surrounding surface. A wet tea-towel thrown over the oil can help if the oil isn't deep. A carbon-dioxide extinguisher aimed close to but not on the fire will also work. Foam is best if I remember correctly.

  16. Explosives.

  17. Water

    Petrol

    Pets and Small Children
