I'm planning to get 2 or 3 dwarf puffers in a 15 gallon tank with a few oto catfish. What shrimp can go with them without getting eaten or ripped apart by the puffers. I am aware that they are fin nippers.

  1. Your right most shrimp will get tore up by puffers, i actually feed my puffer ghost shrimp every now and then and he loves it.

Try some bamboo shrimp, theyre pretty big and neat looking; maybe their size will keep the nippy dwarfs at bay. Ive seen them at Petco before, the ones i saw had real cool looking designs and were about 2.5-3inches long!

    Hope it works out!!! :)

P.S. Im so jealous, ive been trying to get dwarf puffers for months now and no one around sells them and cant get any in as special order so i got a fig8 puffer instead.

  2. Congrats....

I've been keeping these guys for years...

Don't bother with the Otto's unless you really need. Its a common reflex to get them but don't. there won't be enough algae to feed them and they don't eat the food the puffers do.

It becomes a pain to feed them and it fouls the left overs foul tank.

If the puffers are well fed they may leave the shrimp alonebut it's a gamble.

If they will get a couple Yamato shrimp..they will eat the algae you wanted the ottos to and they will also eat excess puffer food.

    Primary puffer food..

    bio-pure hikari frozen blood worms....

They like it hot like 80 degrees and try and get 1 male and atleast 2 females.

There a huge bio-load fish so weekly gravel vacuums are required.

    read up on them....

    good luck!!!

  3. Honestly, none. Dwarf puffers will kill any shrimp. You can use ghost shrimp to ad variety to their diet!
