This guy in English asks me for his help and I said fine. His essay is a month overdue and he is a minority in Canada so English isn't a strong subject for him. When I got my essay back that was handed in on time and received a mark. I gave my marked essay to him as an example. He plagiarized and his tutor (tutor compared two essays) phoned the teacher and told the teacher, but he has not handed in his essay. (so he has not officially plagarized).

I told him to email me his assignment so I can delete all my work he copied off of. I missed one sentence to delete and forgot to delete it and the teacher is well aware that I am genuinely trying to help him. With a partially plagiarized paper, he handed in by a certain time that teacher would accept the assignment. Then I told him to delete the sentence and then re email it, by now, the accepting assignment time is passed.

I just wanted to help this guy. How much will I be in trouble?

  1. How much trouble you receive depends upon the teacher; but most writers have plagerized at some point in their lives -- often times, unwittingly.

When I was in high school, I once plagerized an entire article from Sports Illustrated. The teacher knew it wasn't my own work, but she let me slide with a warning and a smile.

  2. You were sincerely trying to help. That's to be commended. The teacher knows that you are not a teacher. You cannot be expected to help this student the same way that another teacher can. You should not be in trouble because you did not plagiarize. Next time, if you want to help again, ask him to write a paper as best he can, and you'll help him make corrections on his paper. Don't just hand him yours to copy. Some people are beyond your ability to help right now. Thanks for caring.
