Depends on the table.  

Sometimes you can only serve from the left, and sometimes only to the right.

Proper service is to serve from the left and clear from the right.  That is with food.  As far as beverages you serve them from the right.  A good rule of thumb is to never serve with the back of your arm facing you guest.

I own a catering business and you serve from the left and remove from the right.  But hey, if they are leaning or talking to someone on their left at the time to put the plate down, don't just stand there and wait, serve to the right (most people at the event don't know proper etiquette anyways). Just a suggestion.
