Question:

What size Harley Davidson windshield should I get?

I bought a standard size windshield (26.8 inches) from HD, and put it on the bike. It seems ok, but I am looking through the windshield, by about 2 inches. from what I've read, you want to find one that you are able to look over.

HD sells a "low profile" windshield for us short guys (i'm 5'6"), but it is about 4 inches shorter.

I'm worried that if i get that one, it will be blasting air, bugs, etc. directly into my face. Basically what I am trying to avoid.

I don't want to keep buying them and taking them back, so I am wondering if you have any suggestions.

What are the issues with looking through the windshield?

  1. Do whatever you want, but isn't part of the fun of having a bike being out in the open air?

  2. If you have a windshield that you are looking over, most of the air flow will go right over the top of your head. You wont get blasted with bugs, at least not a whole lot of them. Once you've been riding for a while, you kinda develop a taste for bug guts.

As far as looking through the windshield. They are made out of thick plexiglass and they are not as clear as the windshield in your car. They will slightly obscure your vision.

  3. What I suggest at work (dealership) is to be looking 2" over the top of the windshield in a relaxed posture. Most people tend to be very straight backed when trying this, but think as you ride for an hour or so you will be slumped down more. At 2" under your vision the wind will still be deflected from your face/head.

A downside to looking through the windshield as was previously stated is for example: You are riding at night with bugs etc on the windshield and it is raining; your vision can get distorted very easily.

Some bikes where the passenger sits high up (such as on the Ultra Classics), people will keep a taller windshield on to help deflect more airflow off the passenger who might be sitting higher than the rider.

Now here in Dallas there is a place that can easily cut the Lexan windshields according to the rider's preference and costs around $10. Perhaps there is a place near you for this?? Just remember it is not glass, but Lexan so make sure they can cut it smoothly to keep from damaging and distorting the shield.

There is of course the Full-Face Helmet option :), but cuts out the open road/wind in your face/hair feeling.

    Hope this helps.

  4. Quit being a rub and just take the windshield off the bike.
