I have an ugly shower kit in my master bath and I am going to construct a shower using tiles and I am unsure of what size backing board is best for walls and floors. Would 1/4 be sufficient for the walls and floor, or do I need the 1/2 inch for the floor?

  1. If you are only using cement backer board around shower and no drywall behind it, use 1/2" on walls.

Usually you can use thinner on the floors since you already should have a subfloor down. Use 1/4" or 5/16" on the floor. s***w it down good.

  2. I recommend hardi backer instead of durock. Easier to handle, cleaner & easier to cut.
