  1. there are different sizes for different purposes in boxing. when it comes to fighting the size of the glove will be determined by the sanctioning body of the fight and is determined by weight class.

when it comes to training it is good to have different sizes of gloves for different purposes. Sometimes it is good to train with 16 ounces bag gloves to build up strength in the arms and sometimes it is important to use very light bag gloves to build up speed when working the bag. so besides a fight which he won't do for a while at least several years he should have two sizes of gloves. 16 ounces and the really thin and very light bag gloves which I don't know how much they weigh.

check out both ringside.com and everlast.com

  2. the more ounces the more padding is a rule to follow check the regulations but i use 16oz to spare and work good but buy the good leather i didnt and there pretty well done

  3. generally juniors use 14oz gloves, thats what they use in the junior golden gloves, maybe you should get him 16's for training and 14s for fighting (if he is going to fight). in the professionals they use 11-12 oz. in the heavyweights, just so u know!

  4. I think they have regulations.  Last I knew it was 16oz, for a normal boxing match

  5. The basic rule is: The more ounces (oz) the softer the padding. In amateur matches 10 oz gloves are used. For sparring I would recommend anything between 12 and 16 oz. My personal favourites are 12 or 14 oz because they are more the size of the competition gloves so you can practice yor covering. 16 oz gloves are much bigger and give you a safety you don't have in a competition.

  6. 8 oz or 10 oz to hit the bags, invest in a good leather pair as they will last a lot longer,  the cheap gloves only end up ripping and costing you more money buying more in the long run.... 16 oz gloves are for sparing and if your son has never boxed you want to buy him gloves for hitting the pads & bags. good luck

  7. I was a trainer at the Hollington Boxing club in Camberwell South London in the 80s and senior boxers sparred in 16oz and boxed in 8oz  Juniors used to spar in 12oz and box in 8oz,,,so if nothings changed since I would get him 12oz He will also need a pair of bag gloves and a headgaurd
