(like perches, swings, ladders, etc...) any other helpful hints about getting started? what's better, male of female? ok, thanks for the help!!

  1. That size would be alright for one budige in my opinion.  You will also see that you can't put as many toys/perches in there with that small of a cage.  They cna be fine by themselves if they have a large cage full of toys (Especially foraging toys) and perches to move around on.  Basically if they have a large cage full fo stuff to do they can keep themselves entertained while you are gone at work/school.  However, they still need time out of the cage with you as they are social creatures.  In the cage put plenty of shredable toys, foraging toys, and perhaps a few toys that can't be destroyed (Always have more that can be destroyed though) A ladder can be used as well.  Have many different textured perches (rope, choalla, mazanita, etc) In a flight cage he can fly from perch to perch as well.  I know you already bought a cage but I suggest you go a little bigger. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/pr... These are nice cages, and this cage http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/pr... is very easy to keep clean and is also much bigger than what you have.  You will find the larger cages easier to fill with things that will keep your baby entertained for longer periods of time.  Always get the largest cage you can afford. Best of luck with your new bird.

  2. Yes that is plenty big enough for a pair of parakeets. Either s*x is fun to have, but if you want one who is hand tamed, find a breeder in your area who handfeeds theirs and rehomes them. Otherwise you may get your feelings hurt if expect to handle one who is not hand tamed before you get it, because pareeks are very hard to hand tame. Even handfed babies most of the time never tame up. So good Luck!
