  1. They need a decent size cage to have a fly, keeping them active will keep them strong and healthy. A cage size of about 30cm wide x13cm deep x 25cm high should be plently big enough.

You can check and see if there is a Finch Society in your state for more information.

As for keeping a trained bird inside it depends I guess on how big/small and loudness (some like suncures are very loud).

Weiros/Cockatiel can make great pets as they are not to big.

Remember though that whatever you decide to keep inside you should put them outside for some sun as this keeps them happy and healthy!

  2. A nice medium sized cage would be perfect for them. Birds enjoy flying about, and they leap from perch to perch. So, I recommend you put in two or three perches, and get one of those bendable ropes (from the petshop) to hook onto the cage bars, and twist it into various parts of the cage, so they can have access to everywhere.

I've never owned finches before, but I've owned over 10 budgies in my life, and I think they're almost the same. Female budgies tend to stay put, and males run, fly, and leap around after them, and they need PLENTY of room for that.

Now, I have 5 budgies currently, and they are sitting perfectly in their cage. I recommend only keep ONE male per cage, I think this goes beyond word for any animal. Animals are very territorial creatures, and that'll go for birds as well.

I would recommend getting a male & female pair, so they will be able to bond much more then a same gender pair would :)

The easiest type of small bird to train would be a budgie. Budgies are VERY social creatures, and enjoy the attention immensely. If you get a budgie, I recommend getting one first, if you intend to train it. Budgies will bond faster with other budgies instead of humans. If they need a human to depend on socially, you'll be able to train them very easily.

As well, for the second, it'll definitely be harder to train. However, if you bring them both out at the same time, the other may imitate the actions that the other budgie will do, because it will feel that its safe if the other one is comfortable doing it.

However, please remember that before taking your bird out of their cage, make sure their wings are clipped, so they cannot fly too much. Make sure you get a pet shop to clip them, if you're not experienced with it. Before you let them out, make sure you are in a safe, small, closed location. Make sure all small openings, or even large opening are blocked off. Make sure windows have blinds over them, so the bird doesn't fly into the window & get hurt.

Budgies are fun little critters :)

I haven't had much experience with finches..but I'm sure they're not too far off. ;)

    Good luck & Have fun!

  3. If you really want to 'train' a bird to talk, get a young African Grey or an Amazon Parrot.  Cockatoos are great friendly birds, but they aren't great talkers.

If you just want one that sounds nice, get a canary!

  4. cockatiels are gd to train and they are so sweet but the bigger parrots usually have better chances of picking up more tricks
