  1. It depends on your size

  2. I always carried 2 bats in my kit.A heavy bat for playing ground strokes e.g. cover drives & straight or defensive strokes & a lighter bat when i got my eye in for cross bat shots e.g.cut & pull shots.

  3. This depends on your height. A size 5 or 6 may suit you - but pick up a bat, get into a comfortable stance and see whether you are crouching over too far over or if the bat is too high and leaves you feeling cramped. A good sports store should be able to help you - go to a specialist one for cricket if you can, rather than a department store.

It's important to be comfortable with the bat's size AND weight. Go for something lighter if you're not sure. Occasionally you may not hit it as far with a lighter bat, but you will be able to play more shots, and also be able to deal with shorter deliveries at the body quicker as well. I had a bat which was too heavy for me for a year or two and it always left me vulnerable to the bouncer because I couldn't lift my bat as quickly ... not a good feeling!

  4. It is entirely up to you. You have to be comfortable with the bat size. A good way of checking is whether or not you can hold the bat in the air parallel to the ground with your non dominant hand and also the bat, held vertically should come up to your waist.

Also, if you have just started playing, then you should buy a non-stroke bat, which is less expensive, lighter and not covered with oil because if you haven't learned to play strokes yet and start practicing with a stroke bat, then you can easily break it.
