  1. An 8.5 generator will run your 3 ton air conditioner.

You can find one for under 4000$ It will both start and run your 36,000 BTU a/c.

    Good luck.

  2. HVAC Tech.:  You should have one of about 8500 wats - that is about 60 amp max output. Of course you wont be able to run any thing else on that unit as the "start load" will over draw the amp load and kick out the breaker on the generator. Hope that helps!

  3. One that will produce enough amps to run the unit. Check the unit to see if you can findout how many amps it draws. Then get a generator that will produce 5 more amps than required. If you get one that just produces enough, it may not be sufficient.

  4. What size circuit breaker is feeding the unit? With that information, you can compute it easily. Amps x voltage x 2 should give an answer that will let you choose the right size generator.  (30 x 240 x 2= 14,400)  This is a 15 KW size that will be large enough to do the job.  The generator is rated for peak output, which will start the unit, when running it should be about 60% of maximum.  A 5 KW generator is just enough to run a refrigerator and a few lights in an emergency.  Any smaller and it is for camping use only.

For a 100% sure answer, call a qualified professional electrical contractor to do the work. They will know the codes, and the requirements.  This is not a DIY project.
