Question:

What size girth is appropriate for a child's saddle?

I bought my daughters a 12 inch saddle on ebay and need to get a girth for it. Since it's going to be used on a full sized horse for now, how do I figure out what size girth to buy for it?

Thanks!

  1. it depends on the size of the horse, not the saddle. put the saddle on the horse then measure his girth from buckle to buckle

  2. The size of the saddle doesn't matter as much as the size of the horse... A 50" would probably work the best though.

  3. probly a 22 to 24 iam not sure if its a kid size saddle the sinch should be the same size has the horse had befor and it should work srry iam not more help

  4. one that goes from one side of the saddle, under the horse, to the other side.  my one horse was huge, i used my same saddle on him and my pony, the pony had a 28 inch girl, and he had a 54 in girth.

what we did: borrowed other people's girths to see what size would fit him best.... turns out he was bigger then the other sizes so we had to take an educated guess, turned out to be right. i'm sure you can use the same idea to find a girth that fits best, or narrow you're options down to help.

  5. The right size would most likely be 38"-40", but I suggest that you pop the saddle on the pony and put a tape measure around the girth area measuring to the centre hole on each side.

  6. Tie a piece of string half way up one side of girth straps. Pass under the horse and half way up the other side of girth straps. Then measure from this.

Have fun riding with your children.

  7. Western and English girths are measured differently.  The girth on a western saddle should be attached to the saddle leathers above the horse's elbow.  An english girth is longer since it attaches to the saddle much higher up and closer to the saddle...look online for girth fitting instructions and photos or talk to a local dealer before you buy.

  8. The size of the girth does not matter whether you have a full sized or children's saddle. The girth is measured by how round the horse's barrel is. (belly)

A pony's normal girth size is usually 28-34. A horse's normal girth size is aprox. 38-42. But it really just matters on the size of the horse or pony. You'll want to measure the area from the right of the elbow, to directly the other side, going underneath the barrel. Measure in cm, and round up to the nearest even number.
