What size hole is right to thread the canes through in a cane seat?

the old prewoven material was glued and shellacked in. Removing it messes up the groove. So, I want to replace the prewoven material with a woven seat. What size should the holes be drilled? What spacing?

personally, i would take a small piece of the cane,take it to a diy outlet.match it to a drill bit,and maybe get one,or a few bigger,just in case.as for spacing,i would have a look at some if u can,either at a shop,magazine or web

The hole size and spacing are related to the thickness of the unwoven cane.  Rockler has a data sheet that lists these, and also has some basic notes about weaving the cane.
