What size motor do i need for a 14' fiberglass fishing boat, used for two people?

15 hp is too small. We have a 14' MFG Super Bass with a nice running Mercury 25. It just cuts it in our small lake. It will not pull a tube or anyting else. The capacity plate lists 50 as the maximum. 40 - 50 would be about right for a bit of speed and power.

30 to40 hp would do very well. They will give you good speed and gas consumption. I had a 55 hp johnston on a similar boat but it was too fast and hard on fuel.A friend has the boat now and put on a 30 hp and it goes well.  Good fishing!!

I would think 30 to 40 HP.  somewere around the transome area should be a plate with the recamended HP rating. depending on the age of the boat and its condition Id check the transome for week or soft spots. if it sollid it should be OK.

more info would help, like the Brand name and how wide it is.

First, check your USCG rating plate. My guess is the maximum rated HP will be below 40. IMHO a 25 would push this boat nicely, and a 15 would do everything you need it to do.

How fast do you want to go? A fiberglass boat would weigh more than aluminum so realistically, I wouldn't go below a 50HP unit. Most of the bass boats will come with a 90HP unit on a 14 footer. You could check with the manufacturer or Coast Guard to find the OE recommendation.

You also have to remember that if you go too low, and find yourself on a large lake with a storm approaching, you may regret the decision. Too little power can be as bad as too much.
