I've had 2 pet turtles for about 12 years now.

We usually keep them in this huge tub outside in the summer and in a big sink in the winter.

Summer is almost over and I don't want to put them in the sink anymore and I wanna know how big of a fish tank do I need to have them stay in?

Ones about 3 in. and the other is 6 in. and they are painted turtles.

  1. The rule of thumb is 10 gal. of water per inch of turtle shell length.  So, 6 + 3 = 90 gal.  Rule of thumb for the filter is 3 times the actual size of the tank (so, if the tank is 90 gal. then the filter should be able to clean 270 gal.).  You get the idea.

(And you just HAD to remind us summer is nearly over.  lol  I am not a winter person.)

Also, though you didn't ask - to provide more actual water space for your turtles, you might want to check into something like this for a basking platform:

Enjoy your turtles, and I hope this has been helpful.

  2. a tank at least a 55 plus tank and did you know that they need to bask under a reptile light for  8 to 10 hrs a day for the vitamin D that  they need to grow.

Leave the heater on 75 to 78 degrees always.

Their water needs to be clean otherwise they get sick easily from dirty water cause they p**p allot.

You need a good filter system!

You need to feed them feeder guppies, goldfish or minnows for protein and calcium daily.

They need leafy greens for vitamins at least 3 to 4 times a week.

And a big tank 55 gallons or more..

Or a kiddy pool. I got a 12x12x1" cement slab and used 2 smaller cement bricks to hold it up so the turtles could hide underneath for safty feeling. Toss in a buch of feeders and they will be happy. I constructed a t-pee looking thing to cover the pool outside cause of birds of prey. I would keep in th garage or on a sun porch on a piece of carpet for the winter with a rep light for them!
