  1. If you usually rent then get one similarly sized to the ones you've been renting since that's something you know works for you.

Height is a small factor in deciding how long a board to get.  You also need to think about your weight, skills and what you're going to use the board for.  If you want a park board you want something shorter.  Shorter boards are also easier to turn and are better for beginners.  If you're going to ride a lot of powder and all mountain and speed is important you want to get a longer board.

Most boards (and websites) will have a chart saying what weight range each board was designed for and you want to be sure to pick up something that is correct for you.

  2. Go with a board length between you chin and nose anything longer save for the big powder backcountry days.

  3. An easy way to determine the size of board you need is to stand one on its end.  You are usually aiming for the tip of the board to reach your chin, since you are 5'6 than I would go with a board probably around 148cm.
