Question:

What size of saddle do I need?

My saddle now is a 17", which is not big enough for me and my butt...LOL. How do I determine the best size and type? Does the seat depth matter and how high the canter is? Give me some pointers on what to look for?

  1. assuming you ride english, there should be a width of 4 fingers between your seat and the cantle.

  3. I'm going to guess that you're riding English, because a 17" saddle is a BIG seated western saddle.

Start by measuring your self starting at the outside of your knee and go to your hip.  That will give you the proper seat size for a huntseat/all purpose or dressage saddle.  BTW it's "Cantle" not canter.

You also measure your seat on your saddle from the center of the cantle, to the front button just to the front of the flap where your leather fits.

  4. Your best bet for this is to ask an expert. go to a saddle shop or a western shop. there are so many different types and styles of saddles it may take awhile to figure out one that fits you best.
