6 or 6X.  Up until this age, the size clothing that the "average" sized kids (not tall, short, or thick in the middle) wear usually matches their age.  Then all bets are off!

about a 5/6 or 6/7...my son is going to be 6 in a few days and before he gained weight on some medicine he was a size 5/6 and considered healthy size (not big or skinny).

My son always seemed to fit the size that matched his age, up until age 8.  After size 8, kid clothes start skipping numbers (i.e. 8, 10, 12 etc.).  He's 9 now and wears a size 10 for the length, but I have to get him the kind with the adjustable waistband.  I've noticed that lots of brands are making those now, and they're awesome.  They don't look like elastic waist pants, which kids hate.  Instead, the elastic is on either side, and you can adjust it with buttons inside the waistband.

There are no "normal" sized 6 year olds.  In order to get the right side they need to try the clothes on.
