  1. For either you can use a regular size teflon pick that is flexible, it helps to 'snap' the strings and gives awesome harmonics.

For all out metal / power chords use a thick nonflexible pick. I found the bigger picks and odd shape ones, like the triangles, get in the way.

  2. ive been playing for a few years and i say......

GO HEAVY!!!!!! i use at least one mm, it gives great stability with pickstrokes. i find thinner picks are too slappy and get annoying. thicker picks will also help with natural harmonics. for pinches, its good to try and find a type of pick that has kind of a 'honed' edge on it- like some picks round out around the edge: not good for pinch harmonics. you want to get something that will really catch on the string for you and  be sure to get a good vibration for you. as for surface area-- i dont like fender triangles (or other types of huge picks like that), but it has to be something thats still big enough to hold onto good, especially if youre really ripping through some power chords.

jim dunlop tortex 1mm- good pick. i got a pick from a lamb of god concert- it says 'InTuneGP grippX- if you can find that brand, you know its one used by the pros!
