What size road bike would fit me?

I currently ride an old but trusty 10-speed as a commuter around town. It's got a relatively tall frame. I have the seat as far down as it will go but the more I ride it the more I seem to feel that it is too big for me. From center of the crank to the top of the seat tube measures 26.25". I have an inseam of 30". I'm looking at getting another road bike but not sure how to size one up other than standing over the top tube and making sure it clears my "buddies" (which mine doesn't...). What other things should I consider when sizing a frame?

  1. Chalk up another vote for about a 54cm frame;  getting proper measured at a bike shop is mandatory.   They'll also fit the bike 'length' so you aren't too far bent over or too upright.   A poorly fitted bike is work to ride and also unsafe;  one that fits will just sail along........
