The waves there are small to medium with the occasional head high if the weather is right.

  1. If it is your first time I would get a long board 9'-10'. If you are experienced go 6'-2" to 7'

  2. If you're riding a shortboard, I'm going to assume that you're at least an intermediate level surfer.  If not, definitely go with a larger board.  The surf in Charleston typically isn't that great so you'll want to go with something with a little more volume to help you paddle and catch more waves.  If you're set on getting a shorter board, I would recommend that you try a fish.  Check out 9 Fish Surfboards (http://www.9fishsurf.com).  They have a nice line of fishes that are thick and wide.  Their design works really well for waves that aren't so great because it's really easy to paddle and catch waves with.  Plus they have a large selection of sizes for people of all sizes and ability.  At 170 lbs, their 6'2" Seared Ahi would probably be a good fit.  If you're a beginner, you might want to go with something bigger, like their 7'4" Hammerhead.  I'm 165lbs and ride the 5'4" Clownfish and the 5'10" Beluga.  Have fun and be safe!

  3. I'd have to say it all depends on your abilities.  I'm 6'2"  and 175 and my all around board is a 5'7" that I ride on the 3 - 4 foot to overhead,  I also have a 6'3" for bigger days.

  4. I say, get a 6'-2" to a 6'-6".  If I were you, I'd stay on the longer side though.  I'm 6'-2" 200lbs and  ride a 6'-8" Al Merrick.  It is perfect for riding a good day at Folly Beach and even the junk on the Isle of Palms.
