  1. i have no idea what 9 stone is...

ok i just looked it up.. and you could ride a horse anywhere from 13-16 hands.. but i would get one from around 14.3 to 15.3

  2. I would say a15-16.2  would suit you perfectly.

My horse is 16hh and I'm the same height and weight as you.

  3. I'm 5'9 and I weight just about 9 stone.. i am very slim and slender (i hate it!)

And i ride a 17.1 hand german warmblood.

He fits me just perfect.. but i have no weight in the saddle for the higher movements we do in dressage.

I would say for you, a size for you would be from 13.3 hands to 15 hands. Also if your looking for just a hacking horse, you would want a good stable tempermant, and tbh, it doesnt really matter about the size.. just as long as you can walk, trot canter and have fun and control, your fine :)

I was about 5'4 when i was 13 when i first got my 17.1 hand 3 year old!

(i'm 16 now and had a very big growth spirt)

    hope this helps :)

  4. You are in the lucky position of being able to look at anything from about 13.2 up to about 16hh.  I am only 5ft and weight 9 1/2 and train anything from 13hh ponies all the way up to a 17.3 although I look like a pea on a drum!  Go for whatever you feel most comfortable on.  If you are going to mainly hacking you may find it better to go with something on the smaller side and more hardy as often the cost of keep will be lower as well is it being easier to get on an off should you need to! A native breed or native cross would be good as they are usually easy to keep, need less feed and rugging, etc.  Try lots of different horses to get a feel for what you prefer but remember each horses rides differently.

    Good luck on your hunt

  5. You need a pony/horse which is between 13hh and 15hh. depending on the pony/horse build.

more important perhaps is the attitude of the animal !!!

  6. im 5ft and have a 16.1hh id and my mum is about 5ft 4 our horse it slightly too big iw ould recommend from 14.3hh - 15.3hh

  7. Around 13 - 14 hh Im Around The Same Height And Weight My Horse Is 13.3 hh He Holds Me Fine ,

    Good Luck ,

  8. It depends completely on the horse and what you plan on using him for. If you plan to do general trail riding and easy things like that, then almost any horse. It just depends on his health  and build. If you plan to do sothing like jumping, then you may want to look for a taller horse that has more muscle to carry you over the jumps. Unless the horse has bad feet, arthritis, or is very petite, then it should carry you fine. If I were you I wouldn't get anything 15+ hands. It can be uncomfortable to try to get up on a tall horse.

  9. I would say arond 16 hh...not to big and not too small =]

  10. depends on what kind of horse you get, some breeds are more sturdy and strong than others. but you should be looking for around 14-14.2hh!

good luck with your new horse!

  11. em...probably around 15 or 14 i guess...

  12. Ugh. You shouldn't search for horses just by height because you will most likely pass up some really good ones.

    Thats all i'll say.

  13. along with height weight is an issue as well. Generally speaking a horse can safely and comfortably carry 20% of it body weight.....ie a 900lb horse can carry 180lbs, a 1000lb horse can carry 200lbs that's including the rider & tack ect.

You need a horse that when mounted you feet fall slightly short of his sides so you can easily cue him. If your legs fall to far down you'll have problems with leg cues by having to pull your legs up to far to actually lay your calf/heel on him.

    I'm 5'5" and ride a stocky 14.2h, 1150lb horse and a 15.2h 1100lb horse , he's a lighter/longer built horse. Both fit me well but have totally different builds.

  14. I am exactly your size too - I'd say around 15+ hh

  15. i'm 5ft and i look right on about a 15hh i suggest about that for you although it depends on the use.

Just fot hacks i'd say a smaller one because they are easier to, not manipulate but if you have a horse thats to big you may struggle and have to put all you weight behind you so i'd go for about a 15hh to 15.3hh.

    I hope i have helped,

  16. For those of you who don't know, 9 stone is equal to 126 pounds. =]

I would say don't get anything smaller than 14.3hh.  [Becasue I don't know how old you are and you could outgrow a pony!] But get whatever size horse that you feel comfortable with.  That is the MOST IMPORTANT thing!

And when you do go to look at a horse, DON'T use height as a factor.  Say you want a 15.3hh horse and you find one that height, make sure you are comfortable riding it.  Don't just buy it because of it's height.  You could find a horse that is 16.1 and is an angel.  Height doesn't mean a thing!

Judge a horse by his temperment, not by looks or height.

I am 118 lbs and 5'2".  At the barn where I take lessons, I still ride the pony's.  The pony Nicky, is probably about 12hh and she carries me around without a problem.

  17. it depends what you feel comfortable with and how balanced you are. i am 5 ft 9 and 9 st 11 lb but still ride 15hh tbs and they carry me easily.  it also depends on your purpose for buying. for general pleasure horse i think best would probably be about 16-16.2hh hh its a nice height, not too big not too small. :)

  18. 14 - 16.2 hands. (For 15 hands or below, get a stockier horse as opposed to a thinner horse).

  19. I'd recommend any horse between 13 and 15.3 hands high-you don't want to be over-horsed! perhaps a sturdy Native like a Welsh Cob or Dales, or if you wanted a good allrounder an Irish Draughtx Thoroughbred will try its hand to anything! If you're nervous or a novice, a cob will be perfect.

Good luck with your new horse x

  20. I would say that you would feel most comfortable on a horse of between 14hh-15.1hh.

  21. You should get an easy riding horse, smooth gaits and consider how often you will be getting on and off the horse during the course of your ride.  If the horse is tall, (16 h) you probably would not feel comfortable mounting and dismounting 7 or 8 times during your ride.   I would get a horse that has easy gaits, good sound legs and feet, that stands between 14.2 to 15 hands. Hope this helps.
