  1. 5'3

  2. OK I have to agree with the first two guys about 7 foot waves. For instance, I only surf waves that big if they are glassy (smooth, graceful yet powerful waves). Big waves in choppy, current filled surf can be comparable to a mouse that is stuck in a washing machine, if you can imagine that. Take a good look at the ocean before you walk into it, for a lot of reasons. Totally unrelated, but don't swim near jumping schools of fish... I can't believe how many news stories you can find about morons who see the fish jumping because they are running from something, then these guys run out there themselves and get nipped. Anyways, I guess if you have someone experienced watching over you the first few times, and there aren't any  shallow reefs, you can learn on 7 foot waves. A lot of bad things can happen in the water to an inexperienced person who is by themselves. As far as board size, I would say try paddeling around on different sizes of boards. I would be willing to bet that you'll try one that just feels right. That's your size most likely.

  3. Be careful of what you read here on line. There are lots of really well meaning young folks who have neat answers about surfing, but at 55, I tend to classify anyone under 25 as a kid. After I found this site, I figured that I could answer a few questions, and spread the 'good news' of surfing. After you learn to swim and master the ocean, get your REAL advice from a surf shop, where industry professionals earn their rent money selling surfboards. However, if they think you are just a 'kook' tourist out to rent a board, you won't necessarily get the best attention.

Most people learn best on long boards, although I have seen lots of surfers start on a short board and master it. Long boards are ideal for learners. There are also good internediate length boards to learn on, funshapes, mini-mals and some hybrids.

THE REAL BOTTOM LINE IS: Go to a Surf Shop, not a computer. The pros there can give you the right answers!! They know your local breaks, and can recommend the right board for those breaks, and your body size and skill level. I can't do that on line.

Good luck. I have been surfing for 42 years, once you try surfing (and learn the 'right way') you'll have fun for life.

  4. wow, 7 footers? beginner? you're in for some harsh reality, man. dont be starting off on stuff like that!!!  i'd go with something around 5'8." but im a longboarder, what do i know.

As for size, I am not familar with your unit of weight but at 4'9 you probably want a 5'4.

  6. ok your surf 7 foot waves as a beginner, good luck.

anyway about the board if you dont want a longboard than go for a funshape.
