Looking to take private lessons soon. Have never surfed before. Will most likely be riding smaller waves. Any suggestions?

  1. dude you weigh a lot more than you should for ur height im 5'8 150lbs

  2. First I am 5'11' 205lbs and I am pretty sure the guy in the first question would get his but whooped by me in any type of fight so don't worry about him.  For your private lessons dont buy a board, reputable surf shops will allow you to rent a board for the day and will probobaly cut you a deal on the rental, if it is not included (but ask for it to be included).  For small waves a longboard/funboard will be easier to learn on and like myself a shortboard I wouldn't recommend because I have to paddle harder than most to catch a wave because of the board I ride.  Once you become better a smaller board will allow you to do more tricks but as heavier surfers it will also be alot of work getting into the wave.  hope this helps

  3. i would buy a 9ft Mal something like a Bic or nsp pop-out boards perfect for learning on especially if your carrying a bit of weight.

  4. Get a shortboard.  I learned on one and now I rip.

For smaller waves and your size and skill get like a 6'6"

I ride a Channel Islands Flyer II and it shreds in small stuff, but does well in overhead surf as well.

If you go for a 6'6" Flyer II and you really work hard, you'll get good.

    Best of Luck

  5. Well scence you are a little on the heavy side, and starting out. Go for maybe a 7'10 or up mini mal. But it also depends on the size wave you will be surfing on. If there short go with a wide tail longer board. If they are big, get a swallow tail.
