  1. What types of waves do you surf, what type of surfing do you want to do, how much do you want to spend, how often do you go out?

For a longboard, do you want to noseride? Do you want it a higher performance longboard?

I would say get a true longboard, not a funboard, but since you are smaller you can get away with a shorter longboard. What size longboards have you ridden in the past? Make sure that the board isn't so big you are having a hard time controlling it. Go to your local surf shops and talk to them about what they recommend as far as what you want to do on the longboard. I wouldn't go over 9'0 though, since you are smaller.

Shortboard... well do you want a high performance board, such as a thruster? Or do you want a retro type board? Do you want to drive down the line with power? Do you want to get into aerial surfing? Since you aren't a beginner anymore, you can start to fine tune your surfing. What can you do and what do you hope to be able to do?

Most people that have a shortboard own a thruster. By looking at the combination of the size, outline, rocker, and fins, it's a high performance board. You don't want to go too short because then it will be hard to get into waves and you will be slow moving down the wave face. But too long and you'll have a hard time throwing the board around during turns. What have you tried in the past, if anything? I would recommend 6'0, give or take an inch. If you want to have more paddle power, then find one that's a little wider, but probably not over 19" wide.

If you want a retro type board for the ability to ride waves a little differently, you could look at getting a fish. Either 2-fin or a quad, and you would be able to drive down the line more and get around sections that you may have usually missed on your thruster. But not as high performance, turns aren't as tight... etc

Also, how much do you want to spend? You can buy used, buy new, order a custom board, get an epoxy board, polyurethane, XTR.. each with benefits and downsides. Research the materials, see how much money you've got for a board, and decide what you want out of each of the boards.

  2. you can handle a long board but you are light enough to use a short board, short boards are easier to use i would work up on those and than maybe try out a long board. long boards are also more expensive than short boards

  3. Depends on how big or small the waves you surf are.

if you surf small waves, get a longboard because longboards are meant for smaller waves and if you surf big waves, then get a smaller board cuz smaller boards for made for bigger waves so you can balance easier.

if you're 5'3, i suggest you get a good old 6'0 board and dont forget to wax before going in the water! Wax is verry good for you cuz it helps you stay on board to balance and when surfing, push your weight and feet to the board to stay and turn on the waves with your feet ,that way you get more control.

  4. Depending on the area for which you surf, if  it is 2-5 footers get a 5-11 to 6-2 board, if your surf is sometimes over 5 feet then go a little shorter.

  5. if youve only sufed a few times before. you are best to buy a mini-mal that is around 7-8 feet. at first you will be able to learn to surf well, and master the basics. it will also give you a taste for both long and shortboarding, after a while you'll probably decide to be one or the other, depending on the size of waves in your area, and just your general preference. But surfing takes a long time to get good at so your mini mal should stay useful for quite a while. Then you can still youre mini-mal for smaller days if you decide to shortboard.
