I heard a baby and sub-adults need a small enclosure to prevent stress, bt in a small enclosure like a 10gallon tanks its hard to get a good temperature gradient, is it ok to put a baby in a 20gallon long?

If big enclosures stress them out, how do they live perfectly out in the open, in the wild..that makes no sense? how can i get a good temperature gradient in a small enclosure?

  1. ten gal is good but 20 would be better. just make sure the tank is not to crowded with items.

    good luck!!

  2. 10 is fine, 20 Long is fine.  Just use Reptile Carpet for life.  Either one.  For a temperature gradient:

Put a basking lamp on the left side of the cage

Put a wooden half log under the light

Place driftwood on the log (so he can climb it)

In the middle of the cage place a ground plant for climbing

On the right side put food and water dishes

    Good luck.

  3. a twenty gallon long will be fine in my opinion but make sure you use paper towels for substrate and feed him good, he should be alright

  4. My daughter volunteers at a local reptile rescue center and we have adopted 2 leopard geckos.  All of them are kept in a 20 gallon long.  When we first adopted one of them, he was in a 10 gallon temporarily and wouldn't eat crickets.  It turned out he didn't have enough room to hunt!!  We put him in a 20 gallon long and now he's a pig!!  They need alot of room to run and hunt and temperature gradients are harder to maintain in a smaller tank.

  5. The minimum size for an adult Leo is a 20 gal. reptile tank.  It won't bother the baby at all to be in a larger tank (and yes, you are right about temperature gradients).

The only thing you'll need to do is move the lil guy to a small plastic tank for feeding.  In the 20, he's liable to loose site of his prey insects, and you don't want him running off more calories trying to catch his dinner, than he's getting from his dinner.

I'll post a few links at the bottom that you can peek out when you find time, but please note my disclaimer.

Congratulations on choosing a Leo for you new pet.

    Enjoy.

I hope this has been of help.
