Question:

What size tank should I get for fries?

I want to get a tank soon for the guppy fries. Wal-Mart (the only place to get pet c**p for 35 miles) has a 10 gallon and 1.5 gallon tank. Should I get the 10 gallon? Also does this sound OK: When the fish is pregnant, can I put her in the tank, then when she gives birth, put her in the tank with the rest of the guppies? (Provided that the fri tank has plenty of places for them to hide)

THIRD (stupid) QUESTION: Which ones are the girls: the ones with the black spots and the colors, or the brownish ones. I was told that the brownish ones were the girls, I just wanted to make sure.

Thank you for your time and consideration of this long question in advance (lame):

  1. a 10 gallon is good, just cover the filter hole, the females are the clear, less colorful ones and the male is the colorful ..not clear one..

  2. At least a 10gal.

Remember you may have 30 or 40 fry, and you need to get them to about an inch long before you can sell them, or even give them away. So you have house them for several months before you can move them from the nursery tank.

Set up the tank normally with a sponge type filter and lots of plants, real or fake.

It's fine just to put the fattest female in the breeding tank and look after her normally. When you see fry, move her back to the main tank and rear the fry.

The females are fat, and normally dull coloured. The males are smaller, slim bodies and more colour, but they may be any colour. Have a look at this picture, it's not hard to tell them apart. If you didn't know you would think they were a different species.

  3. 10 gallons is okay but 15 gallons is even better. placing the female livebearer in a nursery tank to have her babies is always a good idea if you want to save as many fry as possible. also, if you want to know which baby came from which parent in case you're doing selective breeding. and finally, using colors to tell the sexes apart because modern guppy breeds have females that are every bit as colorful as males and with matching finnage. the most reliable way to s*x guppies and other livebearers are still the anal fin and the gravid spot. the gravid spot is the darker spot directly near the vent, the anal fin is the single fin at the belly of the fish. the males anal fin is shaped differently andf is elongated and cylindrical instead of the usual flat and round-shaped. and i dont find any of your questions stupid. so, males  have the cylindrical anal fin(gonopodium) while females have the gravid spot.

  4. If 10 gallons is the biggest size you can get then definitely get a 10 gallon. You could try shopping online at Petsmart. If you order over $75 worth of stuff you can get free shipping. You could get a kit that is bigger than the 10 gallon you would get at Walmart.

You should get plenty of plants for the fry to hide in when they are born. Leave the mother in the tank till all the fry are born then move her to the other tank. If there are plenty of plants to hide in then you will see many of the fry survive by finding places to hide.

You can't tell which is the girl by the color. The girl will be the one with a triangle shaped anal fin. The boy will have a long and pointy anal fin.
