I recently started learning to play the violin and my four year old is completely wrapped up in it. She has been asking for several months that I buy her one so she can learn too. My question is what size should I get for her. She is an average size 4 year old.

  2. yes. take her to a VIOLIN SHOP.

if you don't have a violin shop (a store which name is _________ violin shop or ______ house of violins... etc. not a guitar center or hames)

    to get sized properly..

violins get as small as 1/32.

which in total, is about a foot long, if even that long...

    i'd say 1/8 or 1/4...

when i was 4, i had a 1/8 violin with a 1/16 bow ( i couldn't use the entire bow...   whereas i got my full size violin bow 6 months b4 the violin)

    good luck and have fun!

(and if you're near NC, i highly recommend the NC suzuki institute, which is at ECU in Greenville if she's going to be doing suzuki method...)

  3. Take her to a violin shop to buy her an instrument.  The sales people there will know how to measure her to make sure she gets the right size violin.

Its always best to buy musical instruments in person rather than over the Internet so that you can look at and try out instruments before you buy, anyway. And if you buy your daughter's violin from a local violin shop, they will be more likely to let you trade it in when she needs to move up to a bigger size instrument.
