  1. One that's capable of going 120 miles so you can get back.

  2. I'm in the ocean all the time an going out is calm then it blowing 15 to 20 so best have a boat that's suitable for ruff water in case it breaks down>

  3. on a really calm day a 12' will work, but the problem comes when the seas and  wind picks up, i've been out 60-70 miles out of port in my 24' striper, somedays are fine and the seas stay flat, then other days the wind picks up and  the seas become choppy and it becomes a nitemare.

  4. Take a look at my Webshots album; you will see lots of Rib's who can easily and safely do the job..

  5. Do you mean in reasonable safety or just barely in theory?

A tiny one can cross the ocean actually, they are more or less unsinkable, like a cork in a bathtub.

I think you better have at least 18' mostly because you will need a lot of fuel to make a 120 mile roundtrip.

Really calm days in the ocean are a rarity, they happen but anywhere near a shore will almost certainly have winds in the afternoon.

  6. I have gone tuna fishing out of San Francisco Bay - 30 miles or more offshore in a 24' rib with twin 90hp OB's. It can get pretty exciting out there and the boat feels very safe and handles the seas well. The boat is equipped for offshore with radar, radios, life raft and all manner of safety gear.
