  1. When are you going to use it for first and foremost.

    Dirt biking.?

    Road bike (long trips)

In town commuting  with gas mileage in mind and no open road riding.

As far as your size. You can handle the biggest road bikes like a Harley.  1200-1500cc  I'd recommend either a Harley or road cruiser if you are just learning. Before you jump on a road rocket cafe racer.

As far as you size you shouldn't consider a bike smaller than at least 750cc for commuting.

Dirt bike at least a 250cc

Now that said in a lot of states you have to have a separate endorsement to ride a motorcycle.  You have to take a written test and a road test just like a car.

You might have to take a motorcycle safety course as well. That is same as driving school more or less.

Where I live when you take the road test you have to make arrangements for a separate vehicle and driver. The person giving the driving test will ride behind you in said vehicle.

What you need to do is go start looking at bikes and talking to the dealers. You can learn a lot more than on here.

Now let me tell you something don't let size intemidate you. You don't muscle a big bike you handle it by balance. As long as you can get both feet flat on the ground standing straddle the bike your ok.

  2. You may feel that you require a bigger vehicle based on your size and weight BUT that may not always be true.

Your muscle tone, your ability as a rider, your previous experience, your ability to pay, as in insurance premium, gas bills, maintenance charges etc. all have to be factored in.

If you are a first time rider, go gradually up the ladder.  Just find yourself a 250cc which fits you comfortably.  Once you adjust to it, you will enjoy it.  Just buying a 600 or a 1000cc is not the end of the story.

If you go systematically, you will ride your bike for a long time and be rewarded.  Otherwise a wrong decision will make you a flash in the pan.  It is your decision now.  Choose wisely.

  3. Your pretty lucky, most bikes outside of sportbikes will fit you pretty well.  Most of the adventure tourers seem to be just your size though.  Look towards BMW 1200GS, Buell Ulysses, Suzuki V-strom, etc.  Not only do these bikes have high seat heights, but they also have comfortable ergos for the longer legged among us.
