My husband is 6'5" and I am 5'6". My daughter is average height of a 5 year old (though she is only 4) What size skiis do we need? My husband is new to skiing. I used to ski for years, but haven't skiid in the last 10 years. What type of skiis should we get? High Performance, Performance or Recreational Skis?

  1. I'm not quite sure so i says that you rent them, its cheaper and they will fit you there. or if u want to keep the skis, buy them at a place with good customer service and ask them to fit them for you because you dont know much yet. good luck.

  2. Recreational, basic skis for beginners (or re-learners).

Generally the rule is the tip of the ski should come up to your eyes. But you might want something a little shorter around the nose maybe, shorter skis mean less speed and easier control, but don't go too short as you will end up having a less than stable ski. If you go to an actual ski shop or mountain shop they should be able to provide you with accurate information. Stay away from places like sport chalet or any other big chain, they're not bad, but they don't always know exactly what they're doing...

    Have fun!

  3. rent them.  the people at the ski shop will help you with everything.  and there cheap to rent - there usually between 20 and 25 dollars for the whole package.

  4. I would suggest recreational skis for all of you first. Rec skis are the easiest to use for beginners and re-learners. Also, when  you get to the ski resort, the people there will be able to tell you which ones are right your all of your heights. i'm 5'8 and last time when i skiid, they gave me a 165 (i couldnt really control it so they gave me a 155) I'm not sure about the "chart" for women, but if its the same as men, then you might be getting a 155. Either way, the people at the rental shop over at the ski resort will pick one that is good for your guys' heights. Since your husband is new to skiing, I would suggest asking for the lowest number that is good for his height.

and remember, if you have a hard time controlling your skis, take them back and ask for a lower number. Its free and you can do it as many times as you want until you find something that is suitable for you.

  5. Take a series of lessons for your husband a beginners package will start him off right.  A beginners 3lesson package with equipment is now about $150, enroll your child in a an all day children's program, and you should take a 2 hour private to refresh your technique and learn about the new skiis.

The new skiis are used differently than the old straight skiis we used 10 years ago.  The sport is much faster learning curve than just 5 years ago, the slopes are groomed better and the equipment is much better.

Let the shop personnel choose your equipment, and then check with your instructor about any changes you should make.

          Welcome back to the sport.

As to the ski lengths, your husband should be on a 160 to 170 to start, then move up to a higher performance ski.  You should probably start with a 150 and then maybe change to a longer ski.
