  1. Empathy.

And you make a lot of friends.

  2. It depends on what kind of volunteer work you do.  My husband volunteers at a state park, and he drives a tractor to mow, he repairs fence, he has replaced wood on buildings and painted them.  I volunteer at an elementary school and I help students who have trouble with reading & math, I make copies for the teacher, I laminate & put up bulletin boards. We both volunteer at the ballpark for the minor league baseball team in our city. At the ballpark we direct people to their seat, sell programs, help lost kids -- whatever -- and get to see the game for free. There are volunteers everywhere -- hospitals, homeless shelters, schools, rec centers, police department, airports -- so just find a place that interests you.

  3. Organization, delegating, managing personnel, fund raising,

all are marketable skills you can use to your advantage.

Then there is compassion, understanding, patience and friendships

  4. Certain job skills, sometimes they train you. Like helping people.

The skills of good character. It isn't really talked about, but it really builds character.

Patience. Hey, if you're working for free, you've got patience!

  5. depends what type.

but ummm you gain a lot more experience and it shows you are willing to help people without getting any real gain for yourself.

It's one of those all rounder experiences where different types give you different skills.
