Question:

What skills do schools look for in teachers?

I am listing my skills in my resume, but I do not know if they want specifics, such as familiarity with Dibels Assessments, etc., or if they want more broad skills, such as "Proficient in Microsoft Office, blah blah blah..." I feel like if I go into specifics, I will:

1. Run out of room on my resume

2. List some, and not all, of what I know...

What do you think some good skills are (provided you have no idea who I am, haha)?

  1. I think it's good to have both. One good way to find out is to look at job descriptions for the job that you are applying for, and try to tailor it accordingly.

Here are some examples of what to put on a resume:

-- "teacher skills" such as lesson planning, classroom management, assessment abilities, etc. Put these generally, and then give specific examples.

--Mention your computer skills, because most divisions want teachers to incorporate technology into their classrooms, and some of the older teachers are not computer literate. Put "computer skills" as a broad category and then give specific examples.

-- Put something on about your beliefs about teaching: your philosophy

--Give examples of your experience by what grade level you taught, and what subjects.

All the best in your job search!

    : )

EDIT: Hey, I know it's hard. I just landed a teaching job this year, but I was out of teaching for two years.

I think you should definitely mention about being familiar with IEP's. Those are the kind of things employers are looking for. Don't worry too much about your resume being too long. I think for teaching that it's okay if it's longer. After all, it is a highly skilled position.

  2. Idk, but good luck being a teacher, its not easy. what grade r u teaching?
