  1. when entering k or first grade? kids are usually six in first so... numbers to ten, colors, letters, beginning reading skills such as text directionality, one to one correspondence when reading, sight words, and beginning writing such as name, basic sentences with inventive spelling.

  2. Besides the good information from other people above, you should also know that many boys are quite far behind their female peers at this age.

It's not until age 7 that they start to catch up with academic ability, eye-hand coordination and some social skills.

They stay roughly even until 12 or so, then the girls surge ahead again with academic ability (especially in English and the humanities) and social skills in response to their earlier puberty.

Boys eventually catch up to girls, but some don't catch up until 25!

This doesn't describe ALL boys and ALL girls, but it gives you a rough idea of the statistics.

    Good luck with your research.

  3. ABC's, counting 1-100, writing sentances, reading words...I don't know what else

  4. My 5 year old when starting Kinder knew numbers up 20, recognized all alphabet letters and sounds, colors, speak in complete sentences, write first and last name, read short words, use scissors and glue, color inside lines, (some schools REQUIRE kids know to tie shoes before entering, ours did not and my daughter couldn't do it), follow orders, understand directions given, participate willingly, control tantrums, socialize with peers etc.

I say 5 because that's how old my daughter started school. Now in order for them to get into first grade- all of the things are an absolute must. Most kids are 6 by that time.

  5. They should know:

    How to write their name

    How to write their address

    Their ABC's

    Knows letter sounds

    Basic Colors

    How to follow directions

    Behave without Tantrums

    Know not to speak out

Can know if thats their name and can identify numbers 1-20

Knows how to use scissors, glue, markers, etc.

    Shapes

How to identify 2 shapes are the same

    Numbers 1-20 (at least!)

    How to share

    Can Identify normal around-the-house objects

    Knows their Birthday

  6. I have a kindergarten readiness pamphlet that says.

    1. Take off coats and put them on independently

    2. be responsible for his or her own things

    3.follow 2-3 step directions

    4. count from 1-30 and recognize numbers 0-10

    5. recognize his/her own name in print and name the letters in the name

6.recognize and name the following colors red, blue, yellow, green, orange, black, purple, brown, Grey, pink and white.

    7. print first name with a capital letter to start and the rest of the letters lowercase

    8. draw and copy basic shapes, figures and lines

9.work on alphabet names and sounds

    10. use scissors correctly

This is what they need to know when starting kindergarten!!

    I hope this helped!!

  7. It varies wildly. Some will maybe recognise a few letters and struggle to write their own name. Others will be reading fluently and writing sentences with correct spelling and punctuation.

  8. Most Kindergarteners know a little about addition but not not too much. They usually know to the number about at least 20 or so. And they know how to spell easy words like it, is, cat, bat, hi, etc. They know like the basic things they learn in Preschool or Pre-K or what their parents teach them before they head off to school.

  9. consider talking to some parents and their children.  schools are a great place to speak with teachers & administrators.  don't discount your own personal history.
