  1. I'm not sure what the above answers are about but I have a degree in electrical engineering with a focus in wireless communications and communication systems.

It really depends on what telecom field you want to specialize. You definitely need a solid background in the fundamentals of communications systems and forms of digital and analog modulation.

If you are interested in RF then you should know about wireless communication theory and antenna design, but if you are interested in IP transport then you should learn about optical networks and data networking operations and IP protocols.

Each field within telecom requires different sets of skills. You will find a need for software and hardware skills to fit the role well.

  2. I degree in electrical, computer engineering as the person above mentioned computer science is a good idea. There is alot of programming in telecommunications. Also a strong understanding of physics also helps.

  3. Lots of math to calculate gains & loses. The field was good to me..

  4. computers..

and if you are talking 'engoinner'.. hmm.. that's

"communication engineering" or even "computer science"

You need to know how data is transmitted down a wire, and that's heavy duty stuff.. but cool if you love that stuff.

ie:  what's the longest a network cable can be and why?

it applies to all communications, even wireless.
