Question:

What small dog breed would be best for me?

My boyfriend and I live in a one bedroom apartment and are looking to get a small dog. I really want something that I can easily carry around while running errands or visiting friends. I know that training is a big part of dog behavior and I am willing to work on that but I understand some breeds are more easily trainable. I'm not looking for circus tricks but being houstrained and learning to not bark,, l**k and jump too often are absolute necessities. I also understand that all dogs are rambunctious as puppies but I would prefer a calmer breed over one that is always wound up. I would also prefer a sleek or wire-haired breed over a long hair.

No Chihuahuas please. Some breeds I have considered so far are mini doxies, mini yorkies, norfolk terriers and rat terriers.

Anyone have suggestions, comments, experiences that might help. Pros and cons of breeds you have owned?

  1. a puggle wich is playful but a couch potato it gets like as big as a pug and isnt that heavey that would be perrfect good luck

  2. as far as small dogs I prefer the poodle they have actual hair not fur they also are very loving and devoted dogs my mom had them while I was growing up ( I LOVE MY BIG DOGS)

  3. A Corgi!

They are a little bigger than what you are describing, but you can pick them up easily (top 35 lbs) and they fit a shopping cart well. They do well in an apartment, I know because that is where mine lives with me and my boyfriend ;) They don't eat much, they are super easy to train, and they absolutely don't jump. You have to walk them all the time though, I walk mine at least an hour a day and after that he is fine. They aren't long haired but its not too short either. Very cute. Umm what else, oh they do bark sometime, mine only barks when someone knocks on the door...good guard dog I guess. lol.

    Well good luck.

  4. Cockapoo. they can be hyper sometimes, like all dogs. but can just be calm. Mine doesn't bark much except at the doorbell. She only jumps when she wants you to hold her. but will stop when you say to. she learned tricks pretty quick, but house training was a little bit harder. i like when she licks me, so i let her, but wont l**k anyone else when they say.

she's not sleek or wire-haired, or long haired. she's just kind of fluffy. she doesn't shed pretty much at all. except when her hair gets too long, and a little in the summer.

the only con i can up with is that she has floppy ears, which needs to be cleaned on occasion.

  5. yorkies (cute!)

Pomeranians (really cute but bark alot and tend to cling to their owners alot)

  6. The dogs you have mentioned above are all very high energy, barkers.  I think a great dog would be a s**+ tzu.  They are wonderful lap dogs, work well with smaller spaces and are easy to carry with you in a bag or in hand.  They are very eager to learn and even do tricks for you.  I think you would be very happy with one.  NOT BIG BARKERS - but will alert you to a problem.  EXCELLENT DOG.  Do a search for s**+ tzu rescues in your area.  You could get one that is already potty trained, has its shots for the year, and is ready to love.

  7. how about a tea cup Yorkie
