What smart-phone can I buy in the US that will work to check email in Vietnam?

I realize the i-phone will do the trick, but this is meant to be a gift for someone in Vietnam and the iphone requires a contract back here. Unlocked iphones are over $600. Is there anything cheaper (and less complicated)? The device doesn't have to work on a cell network in Vietnam, just have a web browser and ability to check email. Thanks!

Last summer, I brought my old AT&T phone (older cheap Samsung) that had web capabilities and it worked fine.  I was told any phone that uses a SIM card would work, so that would be AT&T (formerly Cingular) or T-Mobile.  I had my phone unlocked in Vietnam which was cheap and use the short-term service there.  I sold my phone before I left.

I have a Nokia 5610 that has a browser. So did my Motorola L7.

You can get all sorts of phones here CHEAP to do that...and the phones are cheaper here than there..best of all...NO PHONE CONTRACT.

There are literally thousands of places for you to buy one here.

go on craigslist and look for unlocked phones you can get them for 100 to 500 depending on what u are looking for
