It hovers just above the floor, it reiks like cabbabe & rotten eggs, the smell comes and goes in the bedroon ( the lowest area in my lower level apt)., the rest of my apt leaves my head cloudy on & off and then my head clears when I leave the building & when I'm around the smell I am doubling over almost vomiting (like dry heaves-involuntary), consumers energy arrived to late to smell the odor & found a small leak in the basement they claim is unrelated to the heavy smell I described. The land lord was called first & the maintanence man claimed all the pipes were in the basement & no one would need to get into my bedroom yet they wanted to anyway& found nil.The smell returned to sicken me three days later & stayed for many hours. I donate plasma & I was harrassed on the way there & in the center. I was told when I inquired that their testing would not be able to help me distinguish what was in the air...then they barred me until I could find out, $1,500 later it is not gas! What is it?

  1. Hydrogen sulfide is what produces the rotten egg smell. This is added to natural gas as a safety precaution, so that you can smell dangerous leaks. But... this gas is present in abundance in the sewer as well, which is why your toilets and sinks have S-bend traps. You could be smelling sewer gas coming from plumbing that goes to and from your bathroom, which poking around in your basement would definitely not diagnose!
